The Third Space Foundation was established in the beginning of 2015 to support the theatre projects of Lotte van den Berg. Third Space is neither a physical space existing in reality nor an imaginary one. It is the space in which alternative scenarios for reality are possible. It is the space in which everything comes together, the space that unites extremes without neutralising the differences between them. The work that Lotte van den Berg is making in the coming years, will focus on creating the third space, a meeting place for extremes.
Our mission is to make the conflicts and contradictions that are present in society apparent, examine them collectively and raise awareness about them.
Within the context of the arts, we create temporary public spaces, spaces among and in the midst of people, in which we raise the matter of our social (in)capacity and begin an inter-personal process. The most valuable spaces in the arts are not the theatre or the museum, but the studio, the rehearsal space, the sketchbook. The goal of Third Space is to offer this rehearsal space to the public.
Together we face the challenge of giving a place to the differences that exist in society without ironing them out or radicalising them. A challenge that requires us to question our own positions and momentarily relinquish our own standpoints. Often, simply taking a little step back, a slight shift in perspective, putting yourself in someone else’s place for a moment, is enough to gain insight into existing dynamics and patterns. In the midst of the demands of daily life, you soon get the feeling that you can’t afford to take such a step back and you become fixed in your point of view.
However, in the space of the arts, which is just a little bit set apart from everyday life, we can adopt the mind-set of a rehearsal in relative safety and are able to exchange perspectives, standpoints and roles in a playful manner. Self-realisation and self-development seem to have become the domain of many different forms of therapy. We think it’s important for the arts to re-hijack this domain. Art is the space where we can try things out, rehearse our ways of relating to others and the other.
Lotte van den Berg uses the theatrical form to make relations between people visible, not only within the walls of the theater, but also outside of it. She works in the public space of cities around the world to make visible that which is already there. Images, movements and scenes are reduced to the essentials with great attention to detail. Van den Berg moves between the worlds of dance, theater, performance and film and thus creates an open and very individual style that invites the audience to see different perspectives. Read more.
"I make theater and ask myself the same question over and over again, how can I create a space in which you can look without words and rules? A space in which the spectator becomes a participant who can undergo the performance without expectations."
